4CV special of Lukas van der Westhuizen
1967:
TI am the owner of the yellow 4CV. The pictures was sent by my friend Ray Watson.
Before the rebuilt started the car was completely stripped and then sandblasted before the rebuilt started.
The front cross member was removed and a R8 cross member and suspension was fitted. The rear suspension is also from a R8. I use Bilstein shocks all round.
1989:
The front fenders were cut and widened by about 80 mm to accept the wider tires. (205/50/15 Goodyear's on 7j rims). The front doors were also widened to keep the original flow of lines from fender to door. The rear fenders were also widened by about 60 mm. The rear tires are 225/60/15 on 8j rims.
The rear door windows was changed to one solid window. The front door windows was also changed to a singel piece window. The rear view mirrors is BMW M3 replica mirrors modified to fit in the quatre vet windows place.
I use a R10 gearbox to which a 16TS motor is fitted. The engine has been modified in the following way. Wet liners come from a 1800 Alfa and machined to fit in the block which was also machined to accept the wet liners. Pistons come from a BMW 320i (I think M60 pistons). The cam is a RA5. The head has been ported, but I still use the original size valves. The compression ratio is 10.4 : 1. I also use two 45 Weber's and a 4/2/1 custom made exhaust manifold.
Cooling is by means of a 16TS radiator which was fitted in front. The fuel tank together with the battery is also fitted in front for better weight distribution.
The front brakes comes from an A3 Golf 2 litre Gti. I use the vented disc together with the caliper. The rear brakes is still standard R8 disc brakes.
The car was also fitted with a full roll cage. I have used the car in local circuit racing for classic cars. I then use slick tyres (210 on 16 inch rims).
The car is road legal and a lot of fun to ride.
Best Regards,
Lukas van der Westhuizen
