Equipe Gordini

For Amédée Gordini, GP racing was no short term affair. For more than twenty years, his monoplaces were seen in various GP races all over the world. It began in 1934, when Gordini made a contract with Société Simca to build competition vehicles out of Fiat-Simca parts. Tuning was what Gordini was phenomenal in, so it came as no surprise that his Simca-Gordinis were victorious in many Grand Prix races. The modern FIA Formula 1 championship started in 1950. It was then that the first Gordini-powered car was introduced. The team were called Equipe Gordini, and they prepared cars for both F1 and F2 classes. In the following seven years, the equipe had the honour of having many famous drivers like Prince Bira, Jean Behra, Robert Manzon or Maurice Trintignant, to name but a few. But against giants like Ferrari, Maserati and Merdeces-Benz, the small team was not competitive enough. Getting finance got harder and harder, and in 1957 Amédée faced a hard decision. He had to close down his team for financial reasons.
